How To Make Oatmeal

Start your day in the best way possible by learning how to make oatmeal.

It’s a quick alternative to sugary boxed cereals and provides all three essential macronutrients — carbohydrates, protein, and fat — as well as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber for a healthy body and mind.

Here’s a quick and easy stovetop recipe for oatmeal anytime.

Note: These instructions are for old-fashioned rolled oats. Cook time and liquid measurements for other types of oats may vary.

Supplies

One of the many nice things about making oatmeal is that supplies are minimal.

We’ll show you an even easier way to make a hot cereal meal later on, but for now, here’s what you’ll need to make oatmeal:

  • A pot
  • A spoon
  • Your favorite variety of oats
  • Milk or water
  • Salt (optional)
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Instructions

First, determine how many servings you want to make using the handy table below.

Keep in mind that oatmeal expands as it cooks, so you may only need one or two servings for an extremely filling meal. Plus, we’ll discuss how you can add more ingredients to make a single serving go a long way!

Once you’ve decided on the servings you want to cook, follow these simple directions:

  1. Measure the appropriate amount of water or milk into your pot
  2. Place your pot on the stove
  3. Set heat level to high
  4. Add salt (optional)
  5. Bring water or milk to a boil
  6. Add in the appropriate amount of oats
  7. Reduce heat level to medium
  8. Stir
  9. Cook mixture for about 5 minutes (or until it reaches desired thickness)
  10. Stir occasionally during cook time
  11. Let your oatmeal cool, and enjoy!

If you’ve got time to sit and eat, transfer the oatmeal to a bowl or mug, add a few extras for flavor, and dig in.

Alternately, if you’re stretched for time or need to run, consider pouring your oatmeal and extras into a travel mug or mason jar (with a lid) for an on-the-go treat that can’t be beat!

When considering how to cook oatmeal in the microwave, use the same serving ratios as described in the stovetop recipe.

Supplies

  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Spoon
  • Water or milk
  • Oats
  • Salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. Measure the appropriate amount of water or milk into your microwave-safe bowl
  2. Add in the appropriate amount of oats and salt (optional)
  3. Stir
  4. Place your bowl in the microwave
  5. Cook on high for 2 ½ to 3 minutes
  6. Stir
  7. Use caution; the bowl may be hot
  8. Let your oatmeal cool, and enjoy!

When you cook your oatmeal in the microwave, the liquid tends to boil up and spill out of the container. Make sure your microwave-safe bowl is deep enough to prevent this from happening.

How To Make Oatmeal Taste Good

There are many different ways to make your oatmeal mouth-wateringly delicious. These include:

  • Toasting the oats before cooking
  • Slicing fruit into the mix
  • Sprinkling in spices
  • Dicing in your favorite veggies
  • Adding in crunch with your favorite nuts
  • Stirring in nut butter

For more detailed explanations of these suggestions, take a few minutes to read this informative article: How To Make Oatmeal Taste Good: 10 Easy Tips.

In addition to the tips listed above, one of the best ways to make your oatmeal taste good is to mix up your own hot cereal. What’s the difference between oatmeal and hot cereal?

Well, oatmeal is simply oats and your favorite hot liquid. Hot cereal, on the other hand, is several grains — such as rice, wheat, barley, corn, buckwheat, and others — mixed together into one delicious porridge.

The problem with mixing your own hot cereal is that you have to cook all of the grains separately before adding them to your oatmeal. That takes a lot of time and planning.

For grains such as quinoa and chia, we recommend soaking them overnight to unlock their full potential. You should then cook the quinoa — chia you can add directly to your oatmeal — to make it more digestible.

The same goes for other common grains, such as rye and barley. You’ll need to cook these grains before adding them to your oatmeal, and each one has its own unique set of instructions.

Your best bet is to prepare your extra grains ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator so you can add them to your oatmeal in a hurry. But, again, that takes time — something you may not have.

That’s why The Soulfull Project has gone the extra mile and done all the work for you.
